GUNTOWN - Michael Karl Roper, 76, died Friday, Dec. 29, 2006, at his residence in Guntown after an extended illness. He was born Jan. 10, 1930, to the late John Dillard and Lynne Markham Roper in the Unity community east of Saltillo. He was raised in the Unity community and later in Guntown. Earlier in his life he had worked as a cabinet maker while living in Memphis, Tenn. He was a longtime resident of Lee County and had worked with Delta International Machinery Corporation from 1975 to 1995 when he retired. He was a member of Friendship Baptist Church in Guntown. He enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening and spending special time in his rocking chair on the front porch of his house. He was a devoted family man and a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great-great-grandfather.

Services will be at 3 p.m. today at the Saltillo Chapel of W.E. Pegues with the Rev. Dean Warren and the Rev. Mike Warren officiating. Burial will be in the Saltillo Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife of 11 years, Sybil Walters Roper of Guntown; one son, Steve Roper and his wife, Alice, of Memphis; his extended family, Ronnie Clark and his wife, Debbie, and Steve Clark, all of Guntown, David Clark and his wife, Jane, Patsy Stanley, Jeannie Pruitt and Betty Sandlin, all of Saltillo, one brother, Paul Roper and his wife, Shirley, of Guntown; three sisters, Virgie Mae Hester of Southaven, Jewel Smith and her husband, Archie, of Baldwyn, and Elsie Hill of Saltillo; three special girls, Emily Scruggs of Saltillo and Anna and Angie Herring, both of Guntown; two daughters-in-law, Patty Walters of Tupelo and Mary Clark of Mantachie; 20 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Beth Clark; one granddaughter, Michelle Clark; one stepson, Larry Walters; and two brothers, Stokes Hester and Hugh Hill.

Honorary pallbearers will be Jeff Scruggs, Dan Robinson, Doug Herring, Hugh Herring, Jeff Cooley and Zach Farias

Visitation will be from noon until service time today at the Saltillo Chapel.
