MERLENE E. WHITESIDE
Tupelo - Merlene Estes Whiteside, 84, died Monday, November 6, 2006, at North Mississippi Medical Center after a brief illness. A Shannon native, she was born November 29, 1921 to the late Joe Howard and Myrtle Elaine Harris Estes. She was a graduate of Wood Junior College and The University of Mississippi and later earned her masters degree in education. She retired as a teacher and reading supervisor at Lawhon Elemetary where she served for many years. She was a faithful member of Wesley United Methodist Church and volunteered in the church office. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and a former member of the Pilot Club. She will be rememered for her carmel cakes. She enjoyed attending auctions and working in her daylillies.
Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, November 8, 2006 at The Jefferson Street Chapel of W. E. Pegues with Rev. Ray Rooney officiating. Burial will be in Shannon Cemetery.
Survivors include two brothers, Herman Estes of Shannon, and J.K Estes,and wife, Sis, of Shannon; three nieces; Martha Gordon of Okolona, Karen Burleson of Shannon, and Sara Earnest of Nettleton; three nephews, John Estes of Shannon, Ken Estes of Jackson, and Joey Estes of Memphis, Tenn.; and numerous great-nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Eugene Whiteside.
Pallbearers will be John Estes, Jason Estes, Jack Gordon, Ken Estes, Joey Estes, and James Burleson.
