Kosciusko - MELVIN VICTOR MAXEY, 81, died Wednesday, October 24, 2007, at Montfort-Jones Hospital in Kosciusko after an extended illness. A Mississippi native and long time resident of Tupelo, he was born December 20, 1925 to the late Nona L. and Sally Barnett Maxey. He was a US Marine Corp Veteran of World War II and spent two years in the Philippines, serving on the island of Tinian. He worked as a manager for Better Brands, retiring in the early 1980's. He enjoyed fishing and building and flying model airplanes. He was inducted into the Tupelo Bowling Hall of Fame. He also loved woodworking and spending time outdoors. He was a member of Wildwood Baptist Church.
Services will be 12:30 p.m. Friday at The Jefferson Street Chapel of W. E. Pegues with Rev. Jim Holcomb officiating. Burial will be in Lee Memorial Park.
Survivors include one son, Russell Maxey and wife, Brenda, of Tupelo and one grandson, Russell Maxey, Jr. of Cordova, Tenn.; one brother, Virgil Maxey of Tupelo; one sister, Nona Jordan and husband, Don, of West Monroe, Lousiana.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Sara Maxey.
Pallbearers will be Phil Wheeler, Terry Scott, Tim Gillespie, Bryan Gillespie, Casey Gillespie, and Robbie Patterson.
Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
