MAYNARD M. SWINNEY

Tupelo - Maynard M. Swinney, 94, died Friday, August 24, 2012, at Baldwyn Nursing Facility. He was born in Prentiss County on December 10, 1917, to Clofus Guy and Doxie Ann Swinney. He married Annie Belle Smith, on September 22, 1940. She preceded him in death in November, 1980. They had three daughters, Ann, Maurice, and Helen. During WWII he was a member of the 66th U.S. Navy Construction Battalion serving from December 1942 until January 1945. He was retired from the Natchez Trace Parkway and was a long time member of Harrisburg Baptist Church. Until his health failed, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and gardening. He was an accomplished guitarist and singer and also enjoyed country and bluegrass music.

Services will be 11 a.m. Monday, August 27, 2012 at Jefferson Street Chapel with Dr. Forrest Sheffield officiating. Burial will be in Lee Memorial Park. W. E. Pegues Funeral Directors is in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Anna "Sue" Swinney, whom he married in July of 1981; three daughters, Maurice Gibson of Starkville, Helen Wilburn of Tupelo, and Relda Fugitt (Ed) of Plantersville; seven grandchildren, Chip Gibson (Mandy) of Texarkana, Arizona, Heather Burnett and Tim Breland of St. Louis, Missouri, Chuck Wilburn (Jamie) of Tupelo, Jenny Johnson (Andrew) of Collierville, Tennesse, Beebe Wright (Elizabeth) of Maryville, Tennessee, and Stephanie Wilson (Aaron Dunn) of Tupelo; six great-grand children, Jordan, Olivia, Samantha, Kaitlyn, Faith, and AnnaJae; one sister, Maydrew Reeves of Selmer, Tenneessee.

He was preceded in death by his first wife; his parents; his daughter, Ann Breland; one sister, Rosa Nell Swinney; two brothers, Minor and Millard Swinney; one granddaughter, Bonnie Wilson.

Pallbearers will be his grandchildren.

Visitation will be 4 - 8 p.m. Sunday, August 26, 2012 at the funeral home.
