Mattie "Sue" Gunter

SUE GUNTER Tupelo - Mattie "Sue" Gunter, 85, formerly of Memphis, Tennessee, went to be with the Lord, Wednesday, October 2, 2013, at Baptist Memorial Hospital, New Albany. She was born in Decaturville, Tennessee on July 28, 1928, to Albert and Gertie Broadway. She was a member of First Baptist Church and dearly loved her church family. In her earlier years, she worked as an elevator operator for the Sterick Building, one of the tallest buildings in Memphis until 1957. She fondly said while working there she had as many ups as she did downs. In her later years, she worked as a caregiver, a position that gave her as much comfort as it did to the patients. She enjoyed the time spent and the friendships from the Saltillo Senior Center. A celebration of her life will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, October 8, 2013 at The Jefferson Street Chapel of W. E. Pegues with Rev. Chad Grayson officiating. Burial will be in Hickory Flat Cemetery in Cedar Grove, Tennessee. Survivors include three daughters, Linda Bryan (James) of Ripley, Nancy Hodgin of Humboldt, Tennessee and Manessa Chamberlain of Crystal Lake, Illinois, four grandchildren, Marvin Shults of Lexington, Tennessee, Shelia Gregory of Southaven, Mississippi, Nicole and Taylor Chamberlain of Crystal Lake, Illinois; one great-grandchild, Jessica Shults of Madison, Alabama; two great-great-grandchildren, Christopher and Natalie Fernandez; three sisters, Helen Clenney of Milan, Tennessee, Dee Riley (Dewayne) of Grandbury, Texas and Bonnie Hammers (Jimmy) of Germantown, Tennessee; one brother, Billy Broadway (Faye) of Cedar Grove, Tennessee. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Ethridge Gunter; her parents and six siblings. Pallbearers will be Bobby Broadway, Willie Bryan, Thomas Flangan, Gary Monson, Edward Pollan and Dewayne Riley. Honorary pallbearers will be Jimmy Hammers, her Sunday School Class from First Baptist Church and the staff of Golden Living Center. Visitation will be 4 - 8 p.m. Monday, October 7, 2013 at the funeral home.
