MARY KATHRYN GARDNER SHERFEY
Shannon ? Mary Kathryn Gardner Sherfey, 95, died Monday, March 26, 2012, at her residence. She was born February 3, 1917 in the Springhill Community of Saltillo to Exer and Maude Gardner. At an early age, the family moved to Shannon. After graduation from Shannon High School on May 7, 1935, she attended Draughon?s Business College. She married Glen A. Sherfey, Sr. on January 4, 1948 and they moved to West Texas where she was a housewife and worked part-time for a Doctor?s Answering Service and for a milk company doing product promotions. She and her family moved back to Mississippi in the early 1960?s and she worked for Tombigbee Electric Power Association until her retirement on December 29, 1995 at the age of 78. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Shannon where she sang in the choir and taught Children?s Sunday School. She was also a member of Shannon Women?s Club. She was a caring and devoted wife, mother and grandmother with an outgoing personality and a beautiful smile.
Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 28, 2012 at The Jefferson Street Chapel of W. E. Pegues with Rev. Roger Smith officiating. Burial will be in Shannon Cemetery.
Survivors include her son, Al Sherfey (Linda) of Shannon; granddaughter, Alana Fowler (Adam) of Nettleton; great grandchildren, Aidan and Arin Fowler; her brother, Bunch Gardner (Martha); sisters-in-law, Frances Gardner, Alice Judon, Rhudy Fancher (Robert), Ruby Nell Sherfey; brother-in-law, Jake Sherfey (Ocille); several nieces and nephews; caregivers, Linda Thompson, Patricia Murphy and Carol Patterson.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Glenn A. Sherfey, Sr. on August 27, 2009; her parents; her brother, J.W. "Jim" Gardner.
Pallbearers will be Mike Filgo, John Ivy, Phil Fancher, Bud Gardner, Malcom McMullan.
Honorary pallbearers will be Andrews Sunday School Class of First Baptist Church of Shannon and current and former co-workers of Tombigbee Electric Power Association.
Visitation will be 5 - 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 27, 2012 at the funeral home.
