Mary Scruggs Mitchell

Tupelo - Mary Evelyn Scruggs Mitchell, 90, died Friday, September 25, 2009, at the Gregory House, Traceway Retirement Community after an extended illness. A Pontotoc County native, she was born August 31, 1919 in Sherman, MS as the only child to William Edwin Scruggs and Mary Lucille Ashe Scruggs. After graduating from Sherman High School in 1936, she attended Mississippi State College for Women, graduating with a BS Degree in Home Economics in 1941. She immediately began a lengthy and distinguished career as a school teacher at Baldwin High School and subsequently as an Army Wife, she taught in public, private, and Department of Defense schools in Tennessee, Georgia, South Carolina, Florida, and the Federal Republic of Germany.

A loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and homemaker, she was first and foremost committed to her faith in God and in faithfulness to her Church. She was married to her childhood sweetheart, James Marvin Mitchell, for 66 years and, cared lovingly for him (a 100% disabled military veteran for more than 40 years) until his death in 2008. In retirement, she and her husband were residents of Panama City, Florida where they were faithful members of First Baptist Church, from 1963 until their return home to Mississippi in 2002. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Tupelo at the time of her death.

Survivors include her twins, Lucy Evelyn Privett (Roane) of Oxford, Brigadier General (Ret) James Edwin Mitchell (Donna) of Tupelo; five grandchildren, Beth Huntsberry (Scott), Melissa Gray (Neil), Kimberly Edwards (Rob), Michael Privett (Jennifer), Wendi Bramble (Jon); 13 great grandchildren.


Visitation will be 12 p.m. until 2 p.m. on Monday, September 28, 2009, at W. E. Pegues Funeral Home, Jefferson Street, in Tupelo, with Graveside Services, immediately following at Sherman Cemetery with the Rev. David Eldridge officiating.
