Mary Evelyn Pannell

Verona - Mary Evelyn Pannell, 84, died Tuesday, February 24, 2009, at Baldwyn Nursing Facility after an extended illness. A Lee County native and longtime resident of Verona, she was born January 8, 1925 to William Lewis and Sadie Mae McKissick Smith. She was retired employee of Phillips Phoscuff where she worked for ten years. She was the widow of Ronald G. Pannell whom she married in October of 1944. She was the eldest of nine siblings to whom her door was always open. She loved visits from her family, family get togethers and family outings. She was dedicated to her telephone ministry. She was a member of Union Baptist Church of Plantersville.

Services will be 10 a.m. Friday, February 27, 2009 at The Jefferson Street Chapel of W. E. Pegues with Rev. Ronald E. Pannell and Rev. Gary Pannell officiating. Burial will be in New Harmony Cemetery in Union County.

Survivors include five children, Jean Huckaby Hendrix and husband, Dan, of Baldwyn, Ronald E. Pannell and wife, Brenda, of Nettleton, Dianne Curry and husband, Jim, of Eggville, Linda Brown of Pontotc, and Gary P. Pannell and wife, Sarah, of Ecru; three sisters, Mae Demuse and husband, Wayne, of Washington, Ga., Louise Maloof, of Washington, Ga., and Emily Lamons and husband, David, of the Auburn Community; three brothers, Kenneth Smith and wife, Evelyn, of Crystal Springs, Fla., Douglas Smith and wife, Margaret of Plantersville, and Tommy Smith and wife, Dara, of Pontotoc; 14 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, one child, Baby Pannell, one grandchild, Timothy Huckaby; two brothers, James A. Smith and Charles Smith; one brother-in-law, John Maloy; and one son-in-law, Buddy Huckaby.

Pallbearers will be Randy Huckaby, Harvey Mallette, Jr., Ronnie Pannell, Jason Pannell, Andy Brown, Brandon Pannell, and Austin Gann

Honorary Pallbearers will be the Saltillo Senior Citizens' Club.

Visitation will be 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday, February 26, 2009 at the funeral home.
