Mary Jane Nethery

Mary Jane Nethery of Tupelo died Sunday, April 18, 2010.

Miss Nethery was born in West Point, Mississippi on October 25, 1930. She was the daughter of George William Nethery, Jr. a native of Waco and Frances Tomlison Nethery, originally from Louisville, Mississippi. She had one brother, George Nethery, III. She was graduated from Tupelo High School.


Miss Nethery was a 1952 graduate and later Trustee of Blue Mountain College. She was named 2001 Alumna of the Year. She held degrees from Fuller Seminary and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. After teaching briefly, she was Director of Young Womans Auxiliary for Womans Missionary Union of Texas from 1959-1965. Joy Fenner, former Executive Director-Treasurer of WMU of Texas, served with Miss Nethery during those years and said of her, She was very detailed in her planning and held expectations of excellence. She encouraged leaders who remain active today. Nethery served as Dean of Women at Mary Hardin-Baylor University. Her career culminated as Executive Director Treasurer of Tennessee Womans Missionary Union 1967-1984. Former Tennessee WMU President, Carol Pharris identified a phrase that Nethery used in leadership challenges, " Aim for the ideal and you will reach the real."

During retirement she gave volunteer service to the national WMU Foundation raising funds throughout Mississippi for the support of worldwide womens projects
and scholarships. The Kay Cassibry Endowment Fund supported by WMU women of Mississippi ranks second largest in the state WMU endowments in the SBC. The President of the WMU Foundation, David George, wrote I thank God for her passion for her Lord, for Christs mission and for insuring that WMU will be here for future generations.

Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Calvary Baptist Church with Dr. David Eldridge officiating.
