MARY A. MCDOWELL
TUPELO ? Mary A. McDowell passed away Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2013, at Simerson Greenhouse at Traceway Manor. She was born Jan. 8, 1923, in Washington, D.C. She graduated high school from St. Mary's Academy in South Bend, Ind., and she received a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry from Purdue University in 1944. She married John W. McDowell on Nov. 18, 1944. She lived in Tupelo for the last 42 years. She was a retired realtor, working for more than 25 years with TRI/Tupelo Realty. She was a member of St. James Catholic Church.
She was a former Girl Scout and Cub Scout leader. She did volunteer work with several hospitals while living in Michigan, Illinois and Mississippi. In recent years, she also volunteered at the Lee County Library. She was a member of St. James Ladies Club, Over 55 Club, RCIA team, Tupelo Country Club Dinner Club and Ladies Golf Group.
Survivors include one son, Patrick McDowell and wife, Sharon, of Victoria, Minn., and four daughters, Suzanne McArdle and husband, John, of Wauwatosa, Wis., Nancy Wepfer and husband, Robert, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Jennifer Fite and husband, Charles, of Russellville, Ark., and Kathleen Kennedy and husband, Norman, of Tupelo; 11 grandchildren, Christopher McArdle (Michelle), Andrew McArdle (Erin), Lindsey Davis (Brad), Caitlin McDowell, Monica Oliver (Casey), Stephanie Fite, John Fite, Shawn Kennedy (Niki), Erin Kennedy, Ryan Kennedy and Elizabeth Kennedy; and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John McDowell, in 2000; and her parents, Clarence and Matilda Van Epps in 1978.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, at St. James Catholic Church. Graveside service will follow at Tupelo Memorial Park. W.E. Pegues Funeral Directors is in charge of the arrangements.
Pallbearers will be Norman Kennedy, Shawn Kennedy, Ryan Kennedy, Charles Fite, John Fite and Robert Wepfer.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today, with a Rosary service at 7:45 p.m.
