Palmetto Community - Mary Evelyn Vinson, 73, passed away Friday, April 14, 2017, at Sanctuary Hospice House after a lengthy illness. She was born August 16, 1943, to George Marion and Beatrice Duke Curry. Mary graduated from Shannon High School and attended ICC. On June 24 1962, she married Carl Vinson in Palmetto Baptist Church. Most of her working life consisted of being a secretary for a number of offices including First Baptist Church, Tupelo, the Employment office, the Realtors Association and Attorney Bill Smallwood. She was a very talented seamstress and made costumes for Pied Piper Playhouse and the Tupelo High School Madrigals and even made several wedding dresses. She was also the Regional Coordinator for Sew Much Comfort which sews under garments for Veterans. Mary suffered from lymphangioleiomyomatosis "LAM" disease and was the first person diagnosed in Mississippi. Mary was dedicated to raising LAM awareness. She would puts quilts together that LAM patients would make squares to auction off the quilt to help support awareness. She was also very active in the Mississippi Organ Recovery Association. Mary and her husband are longtime members of First Baptist Church, Tupelo.
Survivors include her husband, Carl Vinson of Palmetto Community; sons, David Carl Vinson of Palmetto Community and Kerry Steven Vinson (Mary Beth) of Tupelo; grandchildren, Jessica Elsmore (Jamie) of Chattanooga, Tennessee, Andrew Vinson of Palmetto Community and Holly Baker (David) of Tupelo; great-grandchildren, Finley and Grant Baker of Tupelo; brother, George Wayne Curry of Palmetto Community; sisters, Patty Simmons (Kenny) of Amory and Ruth Elaine Grisham (Lamar) of Dumas and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Charles Marion Curry and sister, Alice Curry.
Visitation will be from 4 until 8 p.m. Sunday, April 16, 2017, at W. E. Pegues, Tupelo.
Services will be 11 a.m. Monday, April 17, 2017, at the Jefferson Street Chapel of W. E. Pegues with Dr. Gayle Alexander and Rev. Ricky Young officiating. Graveside services will follow in Lee Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Wade Vinson, Boyce Shelton, Gerald Vinson, David Baker, Barry Grisham and Brian Grisham.
To honor Mary's wishes in raising awareness of LAM disease the family requests memorials be made to the LAM Foundation, 4520 Cooper Road, Suite 300 Cincinnati, OH 45242.
