Marvin Ray Hoard

April 3, 1946 — October 29, 2014

MARVIN HOARD Tupelo - Marvin Ray Hoard, 68, quietly exited the room filled with his family and friends at Sanctuary Hospice House in Tupelo on October 29, 2014. He was born on April 3, 1946, to James Ewell Hoard and Gladys Lucille Holley Hoard of Marietta. He was a faithful Christian and a member of West Jackson Street Baptist Church in Tupelo since 1969. He served as a deacon and on several committees, and was a member of the choir at one time. Marvin's career was spent building things and relationships. He was a general contractor who established a successful business building homes for clients who ultimately became dear friends. One of his proudest accomplishments was helping with the planning and design for the new sanctuary and fellowship hall for the church he loved. Although he was diagnosed with cancer in 1991, he defied the odds year after year and celebrated his 46th wedding anniversary with his wife, Barbara, on Sunday, October 26, 2014. Marvin loved his wife and family. He was witty and fun, always smiling, ready with a quip or joke, and a good friend and neighbor. He enjoyed gardening, watching and critiquing the Ole Miss Rebels, and spending time with his family. Marvin also enjoyed collecting and trading almost everything from coins to cars - and once even the house he was still living in! Most of all, he loved people and they loved him back. By far, his best collection was the wonderful friends he met during his time on earth. Services will be 2:00 pm, Saturday, November 1, 2014, at West Jackson Street Baptist Church with Rev. Keith Cochran and Rev. Bert Harper officiating. Burial will be in Tupelo Memorial Gardens. W. E. Pegues Funeral Directors is in charge of arrangements. Survivors include his wife, Barbara Richardson Hoard of Tupelo; one daughter, Lisa Hoard of Atlanta, Georgia; one son, Eric Hoard (Lori) of Tupelo; one sister, Margie Hatcher (Robert) of Marietta; two grandchildren, Lily and Sophie Hoard; one brother-in-law, Jack Richardson of Jacinto; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, James Howard Hoard and Charles Winford Hoard. Pallbearers will be Larry Kirk, Larry Williams, Dr. Mike Currie, Steve Wilemon, Phillip Jamieson and Billy Pannell. Honorary pallbearers will be members of his Sunday school class. Visitation will be at West Jackson Street Baptist Church on Friday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and on Saturday from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Memorials may be made to Sanctuary Hospice House, PO Box 2177 or West Jackson Street Baptist Church, 1349 W Jackson St, Tupelo, MS 38801.
