Mark “Moot” Johnson

Tupelo- Mark Anthony “Moot” Johnson, 61, passed away on Christmas Day, 2022 at his home. He was born August 15, 1961, in Knoxville, Tennessee; he is the son of Samuel Ray Johnson and Gloria Maples Johnson. A self-proclaimed mountain hippie, Moot was a free spirit and always enjoyed hiking and making friends. As a construction worker, he considered himself a “jack of all trades, master of none.” His family can still hear his favorite phrases which included, “I ain’t lyin’, doh, and ho-de-lay!”

Moot was a huge fan of football. His teams were the Tennessee Volunteers, and the Minnesota Vikings, but he loved anything wrapped in pigskin. He also enjoyed rock and roll music, playing the guitar, and in his younger years playing video games with his son.

Moot leaves behind his mother, Gloria Maples; two children, Mark Derreberry (Katherine) of Las Vegas, Nevada, and Nikki Manscoe (Zackery) of Pontotoc; ten grandchildren, Mark Derreberry Jr., Isabella Derreberry, Faith Derreberry, Carra Derreberry, Sabrina Vazquez, Rayne Vazquez, Ariana Vazques, Trista Manscoe, Sophia Manscoe, and Serenity Manscoe; his brother, Greg Johnson of Tupelo; and his beloved dog, Lucy.

He was preceded in death by his father; two brothers, Jeff and Chuck Johnson; and a sister, Becky Johnson.

The family will honor Moot’s memory with a private service. Pegues Funeral Directors has been entrusted with the arrangements.
