TUPELO - Marjorie Jane Milam, 90, died Sunday, Aug. 26, 2007, at the Greenhouses at Traceway Manor in Tupelo. She was born Sept. 17, 1916, in Tupelo to the late Lucius Gartrell and Elizabeth Armstrong Milam. She was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church, where she served as a Sunday school teacher, was active in United Methodist Women's organization, and also helped establish the Historical Room at the church. She was active in the Northeast Mississippi Historical and Genealogical Society. She was an avid fund raiser for the Baddour Center for mentally challenged adults. She attended Mississippi State College for Women in Columbus and graduated from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville where she was a member of Chi Omega Sorority. Following her graduation, she was employed by American Airlines in Nashville, Tenn., prior to returning to Tupelo, where she worked many years with her family at Milam Manufacturing Company. From 1968-1980, she served as a Trustee of Wood Junior College in Mathiston. She was active in the Prairie Council of the Girl Scouts and served for several years as a Troop Leader and as President of the Council in 1958. She enjoyed gardening and was an avid knitter who was known for knitting special Christmas stockings, the proceeds of which she donated to Methodist Senior Services at Traceway Retirement Community.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Glenwood Cemetery in Tupelo with the Rev. Tim Prather officiating. W.E. Pegues Funeral Directors is in charge of the arrangements.
She is survived by five nephews, one niece, six great-nieces, nine great-nephews and a great-great-nephew.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Lucius Gartrell Milam Jr.; her sisters, Elizabeth Milam McConnell and Doris Milam Shirley; and one niece, Pam Shirley Stuart.
Pallbearers will be Dr. Hughes Milam, Will Milam, Dr. Steve Shirley, Tom Hamilton, Will Stuart and Todd Stuart.
Visitation will be from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
