Tupelo - Margaret Elizabeth Phillips Clayton, 89, died Tuesday, April 22, 2008, at The Sanctuary Hospice House after a brief illness. A native of Chincoteague, Virginia, she was born June 14, 1918 to the late John A. and Martha Davis Phillips. She graduated from Chincoteague High School and then earned a degree from Brown Business School in New York. Earlier she worked as an auditor for the IRS in Raleigh, N.C., but spent most of her life as a homemaker, taking care of her family. She was the widow of Stewart Clayton who preceded her in death November 14, 1995. She had lived in Tupelo since 1945 and was a former member of the Tupelo Garden Club and the Tupelo Junior Auxillary. She was also a member of the Fortnightly Matinee Club and a volunteer for The Salvation Army. She remained very active in her community until shortly before her death. She was a faithful member of First Presbyterian Church where she formerly taught Sunday School and served on various committees.
Services will be 4 p.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Tom Groome officiating. Burial will be in Tupelo Memorial Park. W. E. Pegues Funeral Directors is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include two daughters, Martha Clayton Dale and husband, Dr. Robert Dale, Jr., of Tupelo and Sue Clayton Russ and husband, Richard, of Ridgeland; five grandchildren, Mary-Margaret Dale Tucker and husband, Keith, of Verdi, Nev., Susan Dale Connell and husband, Paul, of Daphne, Ala., Weston Russ and wife, Amy-Allison, of Jackson, Catherine Russ Bell and husband, William, of Madison, and Gigi Russ of Birmingham, Ala.; and one great-grandson, Windham Alexander Connell.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband of 50 years, Stewart Clayton .
Pallbearers will be Morgan Baldwin, Tommy Green, Glenn McCullough, Jr., Pete McMurry, Pete Poland, Carl Renfroe, Lawrence Renfroe, and John Tomlinson.
Honorary pallbearers will be George Maynard, Glenn Cotton McCullough, Sr., and James Whatley.
Visitation will be 2 p.m. until service time Friday in McFadden Hall at the church.
