Mamie Marlin

MAMIE SIMS MARLIN Tupelo - Mamie Lou Sims Marlin died on June 3rd, 2014, at Reed House where she had been a resident for five years. She celebrated one hundred years of life, love, and laughter on October 15, 2013. She was born in the Auburn Community, the daughter of Albert and Nona McGuire Sims. She attended Tupelo High School where she was a cheerleader and was named Miss Tupelo High in 1929. The Depression caused her to drop out of school and go to work; many years later she went back and got her G.E.D. While her husband Homer was with TVA they lived many places in Tennessee and Georgia, and, during World War II in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, where he worked on the Manhattan Project and she was a nurse's aide. In 1945 they returned to Lee County and for 32 years operated Marlin-Cooke Gift, Housewares, & Toys on Main Street in Tupelo. An active member of Auburn Baptist Church for most of her life, in later years she was a member of First Baptist Church, Tupelo, and a long-time teacher of the Ruth Sunday School class. She was also active in the Home Demonstration Club for more than 50 years, where on the state level she served as secretary, treasurer, and parliamentarian. She received Home Demonstration awards on both state and national levels. She was a member of the Sorosis Club and Shepherd's Center. An avid traveler, she visited almost every state in the United States and also traveled to England and France. Her family said she would travel anywhere, anytime. She was predeceased by: her husband of 59 years, Homer Marlin of Fawn Grove, Itawamba County; her four siblings, Bonner Sims, William Sims, Coy Thomas, and Marie Robbins Christian; her son-in-law Bob Cook; and her daughter-in-law Betty Marlin. She leaves three children: Rebecca Cook of Tupelo, Hugh Marlin of Springville Alabama, and Sandra Shapard of Delmar, New York; seven grandchildren: Jennifer Smothers (David), Mark Cook, Ellen Gore (Joseph) - all of Tupelo, Laura Sellers (Jason) of Smyrna, Georgia, Andrew Marlin (Jane-Marie) of Birmingham, Alabama, Thomas Marlin (Nina) of Columbus, David Shapard, Mary Elliott (Steven) - both of Delmar, New York. She also leaves nine great-grandchildren: Brian Smothers (Melissa), Joseph Smothers (Kristen), Cayla Cook, Sarah Marlin, Mary Marlin, Lydia Marlin, Rebekah Marlin, Helen Marlin, Silas Elliott, and one great-great-grandchild, Judah Smothers. Services will be conducted on Saturday June 7th at 1:30 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Tupelo. Graveside services will follow at Fawn Grove Cemetery. W. E. Pegues Funeral Directors will be in charge of the arrangements. Pallbearers will be Reed Booth, Michael Cooke, Joseph Gore, Andrew Marlin, Thomas Marlin, Jason Sellers, and Joseph Smothers. The family asks that contributions be made to the Lottie Moon offering, First Baptist Church, 300 N. Church Street, Tupelo, MS, 38804 in memory of Mamie Marlin. The family wishes to thank the staff at Traceway Retirement Center, and especially at Reed House, for their loving care.
