SALTILLO - Wayne Malone Merritt, 68, died Sunday, March 11, 2007, at the Sanctuary Hospice House after a lengthy illness. He was born March 27, 1938, in Tupelo to the late Talmadge Merritt and Katie Malone Merritt. He was a 1956 graduate of Tupelo High School and attended Mississippi State University. He married Coline Smith Merritt on July 7, 1957. He was a longtime member of Calvary Baptist Church where he was a member of the Adult 4 Sunday School Class. He was an avid hunter and enjoyed attending his grandchildren's sporting events. He enjoyed carpentry and had built several homes in the area.

Services will be at 3:30 p.m. today at the Jefferson Street Chapel of W.E. Pegues with Dr. Bryant Barnes officiating. Burial will be in the McNeil Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife of nearly 50 years, Coline Smith Merritt; two daughters, Lisa Tally and her husband, Jeff, and Kathy McLaurin and her husband, Jeff, all of Saltillo; one son, Alan Merritt and his wife, Yvonne, of Saltillo; three half-sisters, Glenda Chambers, Brenda Clayton and Nina Ward, all of Mobile; two half-brothers, Dean Merritt of Tupelo and Jack Merritt of Pontotoc; seven grandchildren, Jim Tally, Lance Tally, Russ Tally, Rachel Tally, Tyler McLaurin, Justin Merritt and Jill Merritt.

Pallbearers will be Jim, Lance and Russ Tally, Tyler McLaurin and Justin and Gary Merritt. Honorary pallbearers will be the members of the Adult 4 Sunday School Class at Calvary Baptist Church.

Visitation will continue today from 2:30 p.m. until service time at the funeral home.
