Saltillo--Magdalen McMullan Irwin, 93, went to be with her Savior Wednesday, December 14, 2022, at Sanctuary Hospice House in Tupelo, Mississippi. Born February 28, 1929, she was the second child of Weaver and Maude Houston McMullan. She lived in the Birmingham Ridge Community most of her life and graduated from Saltillo High School in 1947. She married William Love “Billy” Irwin on November 12, 1949, at First Presbyterian Church, Tupelo, Mississippi.
Magdalen was a faithful member of Saltillo First United Methodist Church all her adult life where she enjoyed singing in the chancel choir well into her eighties. Her life revolved around her family, and she was loved and adored by each of them. She was a beautiful lady who used her creative talents to make gorgeous dresses for her two daughters when they were growing up. She was also an excellent cook and enjoyed cooking for family and friends. Breakfasts and family dinners were always a treat at her house. In her last years, her great grandchildren were a source of great joy. She delighted in each of their visits which would always bring a big smile to her face.
Magdalen is survived by her faithful and loving husband of 73 years, William Love “Billy” Irwin, her daughters, Lynda Irwin Murff (Richard) and Margaret Irwin Phipps (Tim); her grandchildren, Melissa Murff Sandlin (Bo), Nathan Irwin Murff (Kathryn), Anna Katherine Phipps Vinson (Jason), Ryan Phipps (Vaughn) and Nikki Phipps Cates (Jeff); her eleven great grandchildren, Ben, Sophie Love, Jack, Mattie Grace, Mary Houston, Bonnie Kate, Henry, Edgar, Braden, Aven and Caden. She is also survived by two sisters-in-law Sara Irwin Harris and Frances Gardner.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Weaver and Maude McMullan, her sister, Dorothy Jean Long, and her brother, John Franklin McMullan.
Services will be 11 a.m. Friday, December 16, 2022, at Saltillo First United Methodist Church with her beloved pastor, Rev. Tim Green, officiating. Visitation will begin one hour prior to the service at 10 a.m. There will be no graveside services.
Pallbearers will be Richard Murff, Tim Phipps, Bo Sandlin, Nathan Murff, Jason Vinson, Ben Sandlin and Jack Sandlin. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Adeline Jones’ Sunday School Class.
The family would like to express their gratitude to her caregivers, Barbara Ray and Genette Bridgman, and to the staff at Generations Senior Living where she and her husband had resided for the past three months.
