Lynne Whitehurst Furr February 19, 1922 - July 5, 2014 A memorial service will be held at two o'clock on Thursday afternoon, July 31st, 2014, at First United Methodist Church in Salem, Oregon for Lynne Whitehurst Furr, who died on July 5th in Salem. Mrs. Furr was born February 19, 1922, to William Sydney and Arelia Sweat Whitehurst in Sheffield, Alabama. After she finished high school, she attended and graduated from Blue Mountain College, Blue Mountain, Mississippi in 1943 with majors in Music and English. As a teenager she became active in choirs in her school, church, and community, where she was frequently a soloist. Her love of music and singing continued throughout her life, even when she was no longer able to perform. During World War II she worked in New York City and the Panama Canal Zone for the U.S. Civilian Postal Censorship Department. In 1946 she married Howard L. Furr in Dallas, Texas. Three sons blessed their family. During their 67-year marriage they lived in Missouri, Mississippi, Ohio, Texas and in 1996 they moved to Salem from Bryan, Texas. Mrs. Furr was employed by Texas A&M University as the Theses and Dissertations Editor at the Graduate College from October 1969 to October 1979. She was a member of the Methodist Church and the P.E.O. Sisterhood. She served as a Stephen Minister in her Bryan church and was a Hospice volunteer for 12 years in Texas and Salem. She is preceded in death by her husband, Howard L. Furr; sister, Elizabeth Hillman; and brother, Laney Whitehurst. Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, David and Anne Furr of Salem; sons Laney of Salem and Paul of Portland; grandson Luke Furr of Salem; granddaughter Sarah Golomski and her husband, John, of Salem; and many loving nieces and nephews. Interment will be at Ebenezer Cemetery in Hickory Flat, Mississippi.
