LYNETTE MARTIN

Tupelo- LYNETTE MARTIN, 88, died Monday, February 5, 2007, at North Mississippi Medical Center after a brief illness. A Mantachie native, she was born November 19, 1918 to the late Samuel Wesley and Hattie Sheffield Brooks. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. Her early childhood was spent in Mantachie, where Lynette enjoyed playing basketball for her high school team and was voted most valuable player. She lived most of her adult life in Tupelo, where she was very involved with the lives of her children by being a Cub Scout leader and leader of a Brownie troop. She was a devoted member of Calvary Baptist Church, and taught the 3- and 4-year-old Sunday school class for many years.

There are many things that characterize the life of Lynette Martin. One of the attributes most admired about her was her ability to make friends. She always had a smile and a kind word and was loved by many. She never met a person she didnt like. In 1990, Lynette moved to Oxford, Ohio to live with her daughter, Lyn and Lyns husband, Ron. She quickly made many new friends and became an active member and volunteer at the Senior Citizens Center. She also worked as a hospital volunteer, spreading her Southern charm and good cheer to the patients there. Her 14 years in Ohio were also spent traveling, either with the Senior Citizens Center or to visit grandchildren. She was also actively involved in parish activities with her church, Trinity Episcopal, in nearby Hamilton, Ohio. Lynette moved back to Tupelo in April 2004, and spent the last years of her life at Traceway. Lynette, or "Granny, as she was called by most, leaves a family who loved her, learned from her, and will always remember her quick smile and her love of people. We will cherish the years we had her with us.
