Thaxton- Mary Louise Granny Mercer, 102, went home Sunday, June 12, 2011, at Sunshine Health Center after an extended illness. A native of Vaiden,, she was born May 14, 1909, to Eugene and Annie Craft. She was an Avon representative for ten years. One of the first "Gray Ladies" at North Mississippi Medcial Center, she served as a volunteer for ten years and was a 20 year breast cancer survivor. She was a charter member of Wesley United Methodist Church where she taught sunday school and was actively invoved in The United Methodist Women. She was known to her grandkids as Grammy Tooles. She was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, William L. (PawPaw Bill) Mercer.
Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 15, 2011 at The Jefferson Street Chapel of W. E. Pegues with Rev. Roger Hunter and Sammy Lansdell officiating. Burial will be in Tupelo Memorial Park.
Survivors include her daughter-in-law, Julia A. (Judy) Mercer of Thaxton; her six grandchildren, Andy Mercer of Thaxton, Roger Mercer of Tupelo, Peggy Lawrence (Lee) of Columbus, Shirlie House of Tupelo, Mary Barron (Ken) of Tupelo, and Chris Mercer (Tammy) of Mooreville; 26 great-grandchildren; and 15 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Mary Agnes Mercer; two sons, James Mercer and William E. Mercer; a grandson, Anthony Mercer, a great-great-granddaughter, Gillian Angel Gordon and 13 brothers and sisters.
Pallbearers will be her great-grandsons. Her great-granddaughters will serve as Honorary pallbearers.
Visitation will be noon to service time Wednesday at the funeral home.
