PALMETTO - Lola "Bernice" Curry, 83, died Thursday, April 6, 2006, at the North Mississippi Medical Center after an extended illness. A Collinsville native and longtime resident of the Palmetto community, she was born Nov. 28, 1922, to the late Thomas Clyde and Emma Everett Phillips. She was married to Lamar Bearden for 25 years and then to George Marian Curry for 19 years. She began working in manufacturing in 1941 and retired from Lucky Star Industries in May 1991 after 30 years. She was a charter member of the North Mississippi Kidney Dialysis Foundation and was instrumental in the establishment of the Rotary-Alice Curry Kidney Center in Tupelo. She was an active member of the Palmetto Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School and served as Sunday School superintendent and Training Union director. A NASCAR fan, she also enjoyed embroidery, needlepoint, gospel singings, cooking and spending time with her family.


Services will be 1 p.m. Monday at the Pine Forest Baptist Church in Colllinsville, Miss., with the Rev. Bobby Harrell officiating. Burial will be in Pine Forest Cemetery. W.E. Pegues Funeral Directors is in charge of arrangements.


Survivors include two daughters, Peggy Joyce Martin and husband, James, of Nettleton, and Patsy Kelly of Meridian; one son, Lamar Bearden Jr. of Baldwyn; three stepdaughters, Mary Evelyn Vinson and husband, Carl, of Tupelo, Ruth Grisham and husband, Lamar, of Dumas, and Patty Simmons and husband, Kenny, of Ecru; two stepsons, Charles Marion "Hot Shot" Curry and wife, Linda, of Pontotoc, and George Wayne Curry of Tupelo; five sisters, Evelyn Harrell of Albany, Ga., Clydene Chisolm of Jackson, Doris Smalanskas of St. Augustine, Fla., Wilma J. Nelson of the Palmetto community, and Merlene Hardy of Jackson; eight grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.


She was preceded in death by her second husband and a stepdaughter, Alice V. Curry.


Visitation will be after 1 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home and one hour prior to service time at the church Monday.
