Leonard Hinds

LEONARD L. HINDS Tupelo - Leonard Lawrence Hinds, 89, passed away Tuesday, July 29, 2014, at the North Mississippi Medical Center. He was born January 2, 1925, to Earl and Ima McCarthy Hinds. He spent his early childhood in the Ratliff Community. He attended school at Unity. He was called to service for the Army in World War II, along with his two brothers, Lee Roy and Ralph Hinds. He was a T. Five Corporal and a Military Policeman. Leonard served in combat in Japan, The Philippines and New Guinea. He received two Bronze Stars, the Philippines's Liberation Ribbon, the Good Conduct Medal and the WWII Victory Medal. He was an avid fisherman. He also loved to duck hunt. He was very fond of his 1957 Pontiac Star Chief. He was a brick mason for 50 years. He was always inspecting brick work. His wife, Helen, can vividly remember him saying "I didn't lay them bricks." He was of Baptist faith. Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, July 31, 2014 at the Saltillo Chapel of W. E. Pegues Funeral Directors. Burial will be in Unity Cemetery east of Saltillo. Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Helen Parham Hinds of Tupelo; one daughter, Kathy Moore and husband Johnny "J.D."; two granddaughters, Johnna Rachel Moore and her fiancé Marshall Faulkner and Abby Christina Moore all of Saltillo; one sister, Virginia McMillan of the Ratliff Community; three sisters-in-laws, Bobbie Nell Hinds of the Ratliff Community, Lorene Hinds of Tupelo and Evelyn Hill of the Unity Community. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Lee Roy Hinds and Ralph Hinds and two sisters-in-law, Betty Parham and Lila Mae Parham. Pallbearers will be Phil McMillian, Doyle Hinds, Steve Parham, Rusty Whitaker, Dale Parham, Bruce Farley and Gary Merritt. Visitation will be 5 - 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 30, 2014 at W. E. Pegues, Saltillo.
