LEON L. HERRING Palmetto - Leon L. Herring, 90, died Monday, January 7, 2013, at his residence in the Palmettto Community. He was born in Lee County on July 19, 1922 to Ralph A. and Ada Bell Christian Herring. He was a member of Harrisburg Baptist Church. He was a farmer and enjoyed working with his hands. He loved woodworking, carving and making knives. He was a beloved father and husband and his grandchildren considered him the best papaw in the whole wide world. Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 9, 2013 at The Jefferson Street Chapel of W. E. Pegues with Dr. Forrest Sheffield and Rev. David Smith officiating. Burial will be in Lee Memorial Park. Survivors include his wife of sixty-seven years, Joyce Stovall Herring of the Palmetto Community; three daughters, Terry Grass (Keith) and Carol Witt of the Palmetto Community and Sheryl Mask (Junior) of the Old Union Community; eight grandchildren, Fred and Kevin Grass, Joanna Williams (Bruce), Jennifer Lovern (Gary), Jessica Cochran (Lindsey), Melanie Wilson (Herschel), Cindy DeVaughn (Tim) and Amanda Simmons (Scott); one sister, Maude Cates; sixteen great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers and a son-in-law, Dwane Witt. Pallbearers will be Fred and Kevin Grass, Herschel Wilson, Bruce Williams, Scott Simmons, Gary Lovern, Lindsey Cochran, Tim DeVaughn. Honorary pallbearers will be Seth Simmons, Austin Wilson, Joe Williams, Caleb Lovern, Christian Grass, Ross Cochran, Todd and Ben Simmons. Visitation will be 4 - 7 p.m. Tuesday, January 8, 2013 at the funeral home.
