Tupelo - WALTER LEE WILKERSON, 75, died Monday, August 27, 2007, at The North Mississippi Medical Center after an extended illness. A Canalou, MO native, he was born June 14, 1932 to the late Walter H. and Lockey Mae Wilkerson. He was retired from Ford Motor Company. He was the first heart transplant recipient from North Mississippi at the University of Alabama Medical Center at Birmingham. He was the previous owner of L & M Quick Stop. He enjoyed fox hunting, deer hunting and fishing. He was a member of Priceville Baptist Church.

Services will be 2:30 p.m. Thursday at The Jefferson Street Chapel of W. E. Pegues with Rev. Tim McMillen officiating. Burial will be in Priceville Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife of 12 years, Martha Wilkerson of Tupelo; four children, Ruby Durr (Terry) of Canton, Carol Hendrix of Indianapolis, Ind., Deborah Lewis (Lenzy) of Flint, MI, and Ernest Wilkerson (Candace) of Flint, MI; six sisters, Agnes Hilton of St. Louis, MO, Geraldine Porterfield of Kirkwood, MO, Faye Chulski (John) of Grand Rapids, MI, Mabel Kaeshmer of Jefferson City, MO, Ellen Bruno of Palm Desert, Calif., Betty Livingston (Billy) of Hattiesburg; ten grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Bob and Bill Wilkerson; and a sister, Hazel Lowery.

Pallbearers will be Billy Daniels, Tommy Scruggs, Jerry Crocker, Dan Johnson, Jimmy Clifton and Chuck Davis.

Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
