Laverne Umfress

Mooreville - Elsie Laverne Umfress, 87, died Thursday, April 14, 2011, at The Meadows, in Fulton after an extended illness. A Lee County native, she was born May 5, 1923, to Cortez and Jodie Christian Garner. She graduated from Mooreville High School. Ealier in her working career, she was employed by Reed Manufacturing for a number of years. She later worked at The McDougal Center, served as supervisor of housekeeping at the North Mississippi Medical Center, and for Belden Daycare. She enjoyed traveling, cooking for her family and loved her dog, Boo. She was the widow of William Edward Umfress who died Nov. 16, 2004. She was a longtime member of Auburn Baptist Church and was active in the Joy Club.

Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Auburn Baptist Church with Rev. Bob ONiel and Rev. Jimmy Henry officiating. Burial will be in Auburn Cemetery. W. E. Pegues Funeral Directors is in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include two sons, Kenneth Umfress (Elizabeth) of Birmingham, Ala. and Phillip Umfress of Mooreville; five grandchildren, Gina Umfress, Amy Huckestein, and Emily Hood, Becky Judd and April Stewart of ; six great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Wilma Pearce of the Auburn Community; sister-in-law, Charlie Mae Westmoreland of Richmond; special friends, Charles and Joann Sheffield of Mooreville; several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband; a son, Larry Umfress; and a brother, Trice Garner.

Pallbearers will be Donny Pearce, David Pearce, Charles Sheffield, and Jimmy Christian.

Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
