LAVERNE MATTHEWS
Tupelo - LaVerne Matthews, 86, died Tuesday, October 10, 2006, at The Sanctuary Hospice House after an extended illness. A St. Louis, Mo. native, she was born August 30, 1920 to the late Lance Joseph and Della Frieda Cox Eckel. She grew up in St. Louis before moving to the New Orleans area and was a former resident of Pass Christian, residing in Tupelo since August 29, 2005. She was an avid reader and as a young person, she enjoyed playing golf.
Graveside services for the family will be 11 a.m. Thursday, October 12 at Live Oaks Cemetery in Pass Christian. W. E. Pegues Funeral Directors is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include three daughters, Merrily Sudduth and husband, Allen, of Tupelo, Marilyn Chatelain of Gulfport, and Patti Mayeux and husband, Joe, of Mandeville, La.; one son, Paul L. Matthews of St. Petersburg, Fla.; eight grandchildren, Rob Chatelain, Todd Brown and wife, Barbara, Brandi Biggerstaff and husband, Joe, Beau Smith and wife, Kristen, Melissa, Jennifer, and E.J. Matthews, and Stephanie Mayeux; one great-grandson, Asher Smith.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband of 59 years, Edwin L. Matthews.
