Tupelo - Linwood H Elmore, 86, died Friday, August 8, 2008, at Summerford Nursing Home in Falkville, Alabama after an extended illness. A Winona native, he was born September 11, 1921 to William Ped and Maggie Lou Holmes Elmore. A graduate of Kilmichael High School, he then enlisted with the United States Armed Services and was a veteran of World War II. He served with the 8th Army Air Corp in the European Theater. He married Jimmie Lou Winstead on January 16, 1954 and in 1955, he moved with his family to Tupelo. In 1974, he joined Harrisburg Baptist Church serving with the social committees. He retired from South Central Bell after 35 years of service but remained active in the community with Telephone Pioneers of America, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, the Historical Society, and Mended Hearts. He also found time for his hobbies which included hunting, fishing, wood working, clock making, and traveling.
Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, August 10, 2008 at The Jefferson Street Chapel of W. E. Pegues with Dr. Forrest Sheffield officiating. Burial will be in Tupelo Memorial Park.
Survivors include one daughter, Linda Elmore; one son, Thomas Elmore and his wife, Emily; three grandchildren, John, David and Lindsey Elmore, all of Hartselle, Alabama and one niece.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Jimmie Lou Elmore, who preceded him in death February 8, 2008; his parents; one brother, Jimmie Lee Elmore and his son, Jimmie Lynn Elmore; one sister, Lorene Elmore Neal and her son.
Pallbearers will be Bill Rieves, Wallace Crumby, Winfred Hudson, Bill Tallant, Troy Maxcy and Dr. Bobby Taylor.
