Keith Hanlon

Tupelo - Roswell Keith Hanlon, 75, died Sunday, July 17, 2011, at University of Alabama Medical Center at Birmingham. He was born September 10, 1935, in Ypsilanti, Michigan, to Roswell Keith and Mary Jane Blackmen Hanlon. He attended Memphis State University and from 1953 to 1958 he served in the U.S. Navy as a 2nd Class Petty Officer. He was an ordained Baptist Minister and began his ministry at Lamar Terrace Mission Church in Memphis. He was instrumental in founding the prison ministry at Shelby County Penal Systems. Later he served 15 years as the minister of Bethel Baptist Church in Coldwater. He was the owner of OHanlons Furniture Company located on Gloster Street for a number of years and also co-owned Mattress Direct from 2000 to 2009. He was an active member of Harrisburg Baptist Church. Until declining health, he was an active volunteer with the Salvation Army. He loved fishing, and traveling throughout the land supporting his grandchildren in their sporting interests.

Services will be 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 20, 2011 at Harrisburg Baptist Church with Dr. Forrest Sheffield officiating. Burial will be in Tupelo Memorial Park. W. E. Pegues Funeral Directors is in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Alfreda Hawkins Hanlon of Tupelo, two daughters, Callie Jones (Dean) of Germantown, Tennessee and Dawn Steinman (Ricky) of Tupelo; one son, Shaun Hanlon (Elizabeth) of LaCrosse, Wisconsin; one sister, Betty Kinnel of Jupiter, Florida; one brother, Ted Hanlon (Shirley) of Grand Ledge, Michigan; eight grandchildren, Carly Yarber (Jason), Christopher Jones, Jessica Hanlon, Kevin Steinman, Meagan Jones, Katherine Steinman, Brandon Jones and Jasmine Steinman; one great-granddaughter, Maggie Ray Yarber.

Pallbearers will be Billy Haygood, Max Sturdivant, Blue Logan, John Smith, Derwood Tutor, Ken Pickens, Dick Stevens and Billy Joe Pierce.

Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 19, 2011, at the funeral home.
