KATHLEEN SNIPES LAWSON Tupelo - Kathleen Snipes Lawson, 85, died at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo, MS, after an extended illness. A loving wife, devoted mother and grandmother, she was born October 16, 1928, to the late Claudia and Roy R. Snipes. She graduated from Tupelo High School and attended Mississippi University for Women and the University of Mississippi graduating with BA and MA degrees. She also did advanced specialist work at the University. She taught in the public Schools of Tupelo for thirty-two years, being recognized as an outstanding and innovative teacher. For many years, she spent the Spring holidays escorting 6th grade children she taught to Washington, D.C. and Williamsburg, V.A. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Tupelo since 1937. She was a member of the Belle Bennett Sunday School Class, serving as one of the teachers for the class. The United Methodist Women recognized her by choosing her to receive a lifetime membership in that organization. She served as a member of the Alter Guild and was a choir member for over forty years. She served on the Administrative Board and helped reorganize the Member Care Committee. During her lifetime, she belonged to various civic organizations and clubs including: The Saturday Reading Club, Fortnightly Musical, Altrusa Club, Order of the Eastern Star and Tupelo Artist Guild. She and her husband William S. Lawson loved to travel and were privileged to spend much of their retirement years traveling extensively. Services will be 3 p.m. Wednesday, May 7, 2014, at the Jefferson Street Chapel of W.E. Pegues with Rev. Lynn Mote and Rev. James R. Curtis officiating. Entombment will be in the Mausoleum at Lee Memorial Park, Verona, MS. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband of 58 years. Survivors include her daughter, Sharyn L. Davis and her husband, Richard, of Brookhaven; a son, Roger Lawson of Oxford; three grandsons, Keith Davis and his wife, Heather, of Durham, North Carolina, Christopher Lawson of Kilmichael and Kirk Lawson of Louisville; granddaughters, Barbara Kathleen Lawson of Louisville and Loran Lawson of Amory; two great-granddaughters, Edie Kathleen Davis and Lilah Davis also of Durham, North Carolina. Pallbearers will be Mike Black, Larry Mims, Butch Harris, Phillip Williams, Scott Reese and Ken Robbins. Honorary pallbearers will be the members of Belle Bennett Sunday School class. Visitation will be 1 - 3 p.m. Wednesday, May 7, 2014, at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church at P.O. Box 854, Tupelo, MS 38802 or to your favorite charity.
