John Gordon Wiygul

Shannon - John Gordon "Bubber" Wiygul, 87, died Monday, June 11, 2012, at Jackson-Madison CountyGeneral Hospital after a sudden illness. He was born September 18, 1924, in Shannon to Frank Mitchell and Mabel Stein Gordon Wiygul. He was a veteran of the United States Army Air Corp, where he served as a Waist Gunner/Radio Operator on a B-26 Medium Bomber, during WWII in the European Theater. A 1942 graduate of Shannon High School, he then went on to Mississippi State University where he graduated in 1949, with a degree in Animal Husbandry. For several years, he was a teacher and coach at Shannon High School and then worked 33 years for the United States Postal Service as a rural letter carrier. He loved playing tennis, gardening and enjoyed working with his cattle. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Shannon, where he served as a deacon for many years and was active in Sunday School and the Men's Brotherhood. Services will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday, June 14, 2012, at The Jefferson Street Chapel of W. E. Pegues with Rev. Jack Maroon, Rev. Hershel Wiygul, Rev. Danny Rushing , Rev. Mark Cayson and Rev. John Box officiating. Burial will be in Shannon Cemetery with Military Honors. Survivors include two daughters, Janis Hopper of Tupelo and Mona Viveros(Art) of Jackson, Tennessee; two brothers, Frank Mitchell "Mike" Wiygul of Jackson, MS and Glenn Wiygul (Sherrie) of Louisville; one sister Mable Jane McCluer (Jim) of Brandon; four grandchildren Gordon Allen Hopper (Alison) of Tupelo, Sarah Rebecca Hopper (Jason)of Dothan, AL, Mitchell Leon Hopper of Tupelo, Dana Lynn Viveros of Jackson, TN; one great-grandchild, Abbigail Rose Lilly of Dothan, AL. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sarah Lynn Filgo Wiygul on October 27, 2008; his parents; and one brother, George Clayton Wiygul. Pallbearers will be Art Viveros, Michael Filgo, Alan McCluer, Jimmy Rutherford, Mike Witthauer, Hoyle "Sonny" Phillips and Danny Simmons. Honorary Pallbearers will be men of First Baptist Church of Shannon's Brotherhood Department. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 13, 2012 at the funeral home.
