JOHN R. WILLIAMS
Memphis - JOHN R. WILLIAMS, 85, formerly of Tupelo, died Sunday, April 8, 2007, at St. Francis Hospital in Memphis after a sudden illness. A native of Itawamba County, he was born August 21, 1921 to the late John Thomas and Cleo Roebuck Williams. He was a retired employee of Futorian Manufacturing. He was a US army corp veteran of World War II. He had lived in Memphis the past 8 years. He enjoyed gardening, dancing and spending time with his family. He was very involved in the activities at his retirement community. He was a member of West Jackson Street Baptist Church.
Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at The Jefferson Street Chapel of W. E. Pegues with Rev. Michael Dirrim and J.B. "Sonny" Jackson officiating. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery.
Survivors include one daughter, Donna Williams Hadley and husband, H.L. Hadley, III, of Byhalia; two granddaughters, Tounia Swords Herrington and husband, Jay Herrington, of New Albany and Tammy Swords Slater and husband, Harold Slater, II, of Byhalia; three great-grandchildren, Catherine Ann Herrington, Elizabeth Williams Herrington, and Jackson Allen Herrington, III.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Eloise Shumpert Williams; two brothers, Hoyt Williams and Hollis Williams; and one sister, Celesta Williams Bates
Pallbearers will be Harold Slater, II, Jay Herrington, H.L. Hadley, III, and Keith Baker.
Visitation will be 1 p.m. until service time Tuesday at the funeral home.
