John Whitten

REV. JOHN WHITTEN

Tupelo - The Rev. John Perry Whitten, 70, died Wednesday, March 22, 2006, at The Sanctuary Hospice House after an extended illness. A Lee County native, he was born Dec. 7, 1935, to the late Dewey and Heston Tomblin Whitten. He was a veteran of the United States Navy. He was employed by the Bank of Mississippi for 18 years, Marshall Durbin for eight years, and the Multi Purpose Center for the Elderly for eight years. He was known as an avid bowler, but his family and preaching the Gospel were the important priorities of his life. He was a member of the Galilean Baptist Church.

Services will be 11 a.m. today in the Jefferson Street Chapel of W.E. Pegues with the Rev. David Westmoreland and the Rev. Chad Roberts officiating. Burial will be in Palmetto Cemetery. W.E. Pegues Funeral Directors is in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Libby Carter Whitten of Tupelo; one daughter, Lisa Westmoreland and husband, David, of Tupelo; one son, Steve Whitten and wife, Angela, of Tupelo; one brother, Howard Whitten and wife, Gladys, of Pontotoc; four grandchildren, Heather Roberts and husband, Chad, Kayla and Stephanie Whitten, and Josh Westmoreland; seven step-grandchildren, Alisha Bryant and husband, Andy, Wesley Hopkins, Ricky, Danny, Roy, and David Torres; three great-grandchildren, Ally, Hunter and Hayden Roberts; and three step-great-grandchildren, Chapman Bryant and Summer and Hayden Hopkins; special nieces, Dianne Wigginton, Judy McGaugh and June Lyle; many other nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Young and Etma Phillips; and three brothers, James, Elmer and Luther Whitten.

Pallbearers will be John Wigginton, John McGaugh, Butch Lyle, Scott Littlejohn, B.L. Phillips and Bobby Joe Phillips.

Honorary pallbearers will be special friends with whom he worked at the Multi-Purpose Center for the Elderly, Dr. Christopher Croot, and the nurses and the staff at the Cancer Center, the Infusion Center and the Sanctuary Hospice House.

Visitation will continue from 10 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.
