Tupelo-John G. Swords, 62, died Friday, October 1, 2010 at North Mississippi Medical Center.
He was born December 20, 1947, in Union County to the late Gaston and Shirley Sloan Swords. He graduated from W.P. Daniel High School in 1967 and then went to Tennessee Tech, where he excelled in football. For 30 years, he was employed by JESCO where he became a Vice-President and Manager of the Fabricated Steel Department. He was thrilled at being the lead singer for the Paul Rainey Band. He enjoyed golf, spending time with family and friends and living life to the fullest. He was a member of First United Methodist Church.
A celebration of life will be held Monday at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Andy Ray and Rev. Raigan Miskelly officiating. Visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m. in the Gathering Room, followed by services at 12:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary. W.E. Pegues Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include his wife of 28 years, Brenda Brumfield Swords; two children, John Gaston
Swords II of Hattiesburg and Margaret Elizabeth Swords of Birmingham; his two sisters, Deborah Basinger (Van) of Muscle Shoals, AL and Lisbeth Spiller of St. Louis,MO; and his brother Robert Swords of New Albany; two nephews, Gabe Basinger (Kylie) , Andrew Basinger (Shannon); one niece, Beth Swords and two great nephews, John Michael and Carter Basinger. He also is survived by mother and father-in-law Robert W. and Dennie Brumfield of McComb, and two loving sisters-in-law, Janet Brumfield of Atlanta and Betsy Brumfield of Dallas. He will be sorely missed by his beloved dogs: Cocoa, Charlie and Linus.
