John Whitten Street

JOHN WHITTEN STREET Tupelo - John Whitten Street, 88, died Friday, March 29, 2014, at The Veteran's Home in Oxford. He was born April 15, 1925, in Tippah County, Mississippi, to Effie Whitten Street and Vibrait Lee Street. He grew up in Dumas, Mississippi, and graduated from Dumas High School in 1943. He served in WWII in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946 as a radio code reader on the USS Sommelsdijk in the South Pacific. He graduated from MSU in 1950 with a B.S. in education. He coached two years of basketball at Pine Grove, taking his teams to the state playoffs. He then began a 38 year career with MS Dept. of Trans. where he retired as a Senior Engineering Technician. He was an avid Mississippi State fan. He enjoyed reading and spending time with his granddaughters. He was an active member of Gloster St. Church of Christ for over 50 years. Services will be 2:30 p.m. Sunday, March 30, 2014, at The Jefferson Street Chapel of W.E. Pegues with Minister Chad Ramsey officiating. Burial will be in Tupelo Memorial Park. Survivors include his wife of sixty years, Hazel Franklin Street of Tupelo; one daughter, Sally Williams (John) and two granddaughters, Eliza and Ellen Williams all of Oxford. He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, John Franklin Street; one brother, Vernon Street and one sister, Anita Street. Pallbearers will be his nephews, Russell Street, Robin Street, Eric Street, M.D., Randy Monaghan, Jeff Monaghan, Brian Monaghan, Drew Miller, Jay Blankenship, Hank Franklin, Mark Franklin, Will Weaver and Bo Reed. Honorary pallbearers will be the deacons and elders of Gloster St. Church of Christ, Thurston Davis, Devon Jones, William Henson and Terry Smith. Visitation will be 12:30 - 2:30 Sunday, March 30, 2014, at the funeral home. The family wishes to thank the MS State Veterans Home in Oxford and Community Hospice for their constant and continued care. Memorials may be made to Gloster St. Church of Christ Building Fund, 307, N. Gloster St., Tupelo, MS 38804.
