John Caldwell

MR. JAKE CALDWELL Mt Vernon - John Chester "Jake" Caldwell, 89, died Friday, October 26, 2012, at the State Veterans Home in Oxford. He was born June 21, 1923 in Sherman to Chester Cooper and Notie Lura Phillips Caldwell. He served in the South Pacific during World War II as a Sea B. and ship welder, working on the dry docks, in the United States Navy. He retired from Day Brite after thirty-eight years. He was a hunting and fishing enthusiest. An avid vegetable gardener, he was known throughout the community for his Truck Patch and sold vegetables for over forty years. He was a life long member of Mt. Vernon Baptist Church. Services will be 2:00 p.m. Sunday, October 28, 2012 at The Jefferson Street Chapel of W. E. Pegues with Bro. Jim Manley and Rev. Doug Westmoreland officiating. Burial will be in Union Cemetery, West of Belden. Survivors include two sons, Jim Caldwell (Sandra) of Tupelo and Buzz Caldwell (Janice) of the Mt. Vernon Community; four grandchildren, Tony Caldwell of Byhalia , Candi Russell of Houlka, Jennifer Kerry Wiygul of the Dorsey Community, Jason Cody Caldwell of Hernando; nine great-grandchildren; a special friend and caregiver, Lucy Horton He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of fifty-nine years, Vivian M. Moore Caldwell who died July 9, 2005; one brother, Roy Wright Caldwell; one grandson, Eric Cooper Caldwell. Pallbearers will be Tony Caldwell, Dana Russell, Lewis Gambrell, Tommy Bradsher, Cody Caldwell and Trae Wiygul. Visitation will be 5 to 8:00 p.m. Saturday, October 27, 2012 at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to The States Veteran Home, 3261 Hwy 49, Collins, MS 39428 and The Alzheimer's Association,1900 Dunbarton Drive, Suite 1, Jackson, MS 39216.
