Joan Blackwell

Tupelo—Joan Blackwell, 93, passed away Thursday, May 4, 2023 at her Traceway Retirement Cottage. A Tupelo native and lifelong resident, she was born August 25, 1929 to James Troy and Cletus Young Blackwell. She was a 1947 graduate of Tupelo High School and then earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Alabama in 1951. In 1954 she received her Master of Science in Education from Indiana University. Joan was a teacher and librarian in multiple school districts across the country. She enjoyed traveling extensively and taking care of her little dog.
Joan is survived by her cousins, Jacque Prather and wife, Patti, Ron Blackwell and wife, Frances, David Blackwell and wife, Linda, and Jennifer Lawrence and husband, Keith.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Gwen Blackwell.
A stateroom service will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, May 7, 2023 at Pegues Funeral Directors, Tupelo with Rev. Dr. Ron Richardson officiating. Visitation will be 12 p.m. until service time Sunday. Burial will be in Tupelo Memorial Park.
