JIMMIE R. JOHNSON
Verona - Jimmie R. Johnson, 78, died Friday, December 8, 2006, at The Sanctuary Hospice House after an extended illness. A Mantee native, he was born March 15, 1928 to the late David Wesley and Edna Lee Scott Johnson. He was a U.S.Army veteran, serving during the Korean Conflict. He had worked 41 years with South Central Bell as a lineman, engineer and supervisor. He served on the Board of Aldermen in Verona. An avid fan of Mississippi State athletics, he also enjoyed gardening and outdoors. He loved his family and the time they shared together. He was a faithful and dedicated member of First Baptist Church of Verona where he had served as an ordained deacon and Sunday School teacher for over 45 years.
Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at First Baptist Church of Verona with Dr. Jim Futral, Dr. David Hamilton, and Rev. Jerry East officiating. Burial will be in Lee Memorial Park. W. E. Pegues Funeral Directors is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include his wife of 25 years, Kathryn (Kathy) Hill Wofford Johnson of Tupelo; one daughter, Jackie McElwain (Mike) of Kosciusko; one son, Jim H. Johnson (Kristy) of Shannon; one step-daughter, Debra Wofford Hill (Brian) of Tupelo; two step-sons, Tommy Wofford (Susan) of Fuquay-Varina, N.C., and Patrick Wofford (Karen) of Pelahatchie; two sisters, Virginia Duncan (Arnold), Glenda Duncan (Ruble); two brothers, Wayne Johnson (Nick), Max Johnson (Marie) all of Mantee; special family friend, Virgie Hovell of Tupelo; eight grandchildren, Corey McElwain, Cody McElwain, Kelly Johnson, Ben Wofford, Coltan Wofford, Lauren Hill, Carson Wofford, Preston Wofford.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife and the mother of his children, Ann Carson Johnson; two sisters, Earlene King and Lois Caradine; four brothers, A.O., Boyce, Tom and W.O. Johnson.
Pallbearers will be Corey and Cody McElwain, Jerry Grissom, Dennis Buckner, Hugh Duvall, and Kenny Hankins.
Honorary Pallbearers will be the Jimmie Johnson Sunday School Class and the Wednesday Morning Men's Prayer Group.
Visitation will be 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
