JIM INGRAM
Tupelo - JAMES F. "JIM INGRAM, 75, died Friday, September 22, 2006, at The Sanctuary Hospice House. He was born November 20, 1930, in Calera, Ala. to the late Terrell Wright and Laura Alexander Ingram. A 1949 graduate of Phillips High School in Birmingham, Ala., he attended Ole Miss on a football scholarship, was co-captain of the 1953 Sugar Bowl team, and an "All SEC" Linebacker. While at Ole Miss, he was a member of the ROTC. Upon graduation, he served two years in the Army, where he was stationed at Fort Benning, Ga. He continued his military career in the Mississippi Army Natioal Guard retiring as a two star general in 1982. Earlier in his life, he taught school and was the head football coach at Sardis and Amory High Schools before becoming the head coach of the Tupelo Golden Wave Football team in 1958. In 1959 he served dual roles as head coach and principal. He joined Community Federal Savings and Loan Association in Tupelo 1961 to 2001, serving as its president, and CEO from 1984 until 1999. Under his leadership, Community Federal went public in 1996.
He has served the community and his alma mater in numerous capacities. He was a longtime member and past president of the Tupelo Kiwanis Club. He was instrumental in bringing the Salvation Army to Tupelo and was the recipient of the "Others Award," their highest recognition. In 1988, he was named the Tupelo Junior Auxiliarys "Citizen of the Year". He served as chairman for the Community Development Foundation 1996-97 and as chariman of the Create Foundation from 1998 to 2000. He served on the Tupelo City School Board for ten years, serving as president the last five. In 1992, former Gov. Kirk Fordice appointed him chairman of the Mississippi Employment Security Commission, which he served for two terms until 2000. He also served on the North Mississippi Medical Center Board from 1994-2004 as well as the Board of Directors of The Sanctuary Hospice House. He was past president of the M-Club, the University of Mississippi Alumni Association and received the Distinguished American Award from the Ole Miss Chapter of the National Football Hall of Fame. He was inducted into the Ole Miss Hall of Fame in 1998. He was honored by M & F Bank by the establishment of an endowment Scholarship at Ole Miss in his and his wife's name. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church where he served as Elder.
Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Monday in Tupelo Memorial Park and a memorial service will follow at 2 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church. Dr. Tom Groome will officiate. W. E. Pegues Funeral Directors is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Nancy Murray Ingram; one daughter, Holly Ingram Rogers and husband, Chris; one son, James F. "Jim" Ingram, Jr. and wife, Heather, all of Tupelo; one sister, Bea Allen, of Maryville, Tenn.; and four grandchildren, Kyle Rogers of Memphis, Kory Rogers, Jennifer Ingram and Jamie Ingram, all of Tupelo.
He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant son, two sisters, and one brother.
Pallbearers will be Gray Megginson, Chuck Imbler, Dr. Leighton Pettis, Lea Paslay, Lewis Whitfield, Britt Rogers, Buddy McCarty, and Chris Rogers.
Honorary Pallbearers will be the past and present employees of Community Federal/Merchant & Farmers Bank.
Visitation will be 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
