Jewel Harris, 83, died surrounded by her family Monday, April 9, 2018, at Sanctuary Hospice House after a lengthy illness. She was born in Lee County August 28, 1934, to Noah and Clara Frederick Edwards. Early in life, she worked a number of years as a seamstress at Reed’s Department Store. On July 15, 1950, she married Melvin Harris and together they had four children. Jewel enjoyed crocheting, working with ceramics, and playing Skip-Bo with friends. She also found great joy in being outdoors camping, fishing and tending to her flower and vegetable gardens. Jewel shared a special bond with her miniature Pomeranian, Tiny. She was a longtime member of West Jackson Street Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband of 67 years, Melvin Harris; her children, Jean Walls and her husband, Pat of Ocean Springs, Rick Harris and his wife, Jody of Pontotoc, Terry Harris and his wife, Monte of Tupelo and Tony Harris and his wife, Angela also of Tupelo; 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Kathy Reich.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and five brothers, Aubrey, Doyce, Otis, Allen and Billy Edwards.
Visitation will be from 5 until 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 10, 2018 at W.E. Pegues, Tupelo.
Services honoring her life will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 11, 2018 at the Jefferson Street Chapel with Rev. Bert Harper officiating. Graveside service will follow in Tupelo Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons.
