Jewel Ferguson

February 18, 1917 — November 19, 2007

Tupelo - Jewel Evans (Price) Ferguson, 90, died Sunday, November 18, 2007, at Chadwick Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Jackson, MS after an extended illness. A Lee County native, she was born February 19, 1917, to the late Sam Phant Evans and Ola Mills Evans.

Jewels greatest joys in life were her children and grandchildren and her large extended family. She was a storyteller and poet, creatively telling the stories of the Bible to children and adult Sunday School classes. One of her favorite hobbies was creating fascinating stories for her grandchildren. She wrote poetry to celebrate those she loved and to inspire those she taught. Her life was built around serving God at Harrisburg and Calvary Baptist Churches, where she loved singing in the choir and teaching her young married girls. As secretary at Leake and Goodlett Lumber Company, she loved typing letters for dear Mr. Leake and helping their clients decorate their homes. As interior decorator for Sears, she enjoyed creating beautiful spaces in her clients homes. She was honored several times by Sears as top decorator in the Southeast.

In her later years, Jewel loved serving as House Director for Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity and Zeta Tau Alpha sorority at Mississippi State University. She was thrilled to be named an honorary Zeta. She was an avid Bulldog fan.

Jewel loved to entertain. She loved to dance. Her family describe her as vivacious and elegant, a woman of passion and creativity, our best friend as well as our mom. She could meet everyone and make everyone feel good. She was a rare mix of elegance and class and fun. Everything she did she did with great excellence. She was a member of Faith Baptist Church in Starkville, MS.
