Tupelo - Jessie Payne Williams, 90, died Saturday, September 20, 2008, at Simerson Greenhouse at Traceway Manor after an extended illness. She was born September 15, 1918 to L. M. Boss Payne and Betty Josephine Burroughs Payne. She was the widow of Copper Williams whom she married in 1937. In 1965, she joined and remained an active member of West Jackson Street Baptist Church where she taught in an adult ladys Sunday School class for several years. She worked 27 years with Shainbergs and Kents. She also worked 19 years at Romies Grocery. She had many hobbies but especially enjoyed working and continued until she retired at the age of 83 years.
Services will be 12:30 p.m. Monday, September 22, 2008 at The Jefferson Street Chapel of W. E. Pegues with Rev. Doug Jones officiating. Burial will be in Tupelo Memorial Park.
Survivors include one daughter, Nita Cozart and her husband, Darwyn, of Carr Acres; two sons, Thomas Williams and his wife, Bonnie, of Memphis, Tennessee and Randy Williams and his wife, Rev. Janet Deitrich Williams, of Atlanta, Georgia; three sisters, Hosford Payne Morgan of Tupelo, Oline Cartee and her husband, Charlie, of West Point and Beatrice Hutchinson of Saltillo; two grandaughters, Julie Repult and her husband, Mac, of Tupelo, Jessica Szeflins of Minnesota; four grandsons, Terryl Cozart and his wife, Lisa, of Tupelo, Shannon Williams of Memphis, Brett Williams and his wife, Shanna, of Memphis and Josh Williams of Pontotoc; 8 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Peggy Hurley.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 41 years, Cooper Williams; who preceded her in death on November 28, 1978; her parents; one sister, Lexie Lavalley; one brother, Milton Kenneth Payne.
Pallbearers will be Buddy Davis, Pete Allen, Andy LaValley, Brett Williams, Mac Repult and Ken LaValley.
Visitation will be 5 - 9 p.m. Sunday, September 21, 2008 at the funeral home.
