Jerry "Hoppy" McKissick

March 18, 1945 — December 27, 2022

Unity Community—Jerry Cratis “Hoppy” McKissick, at the age of 77, passed away December 27, 2022 at the North Mississippi Medical Center after a lengthy illness. He was born March 18, 1945 in Tupelo to Clarence “Bill” and Lila Mullenix McKissick. Even as a young boy, Hoppy had a strong work ethic which continued into adulthood. Following his graduation from high school, Hoppy proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. After his discharge, he returned to Mississippi where he began his career as a conductor for the GM and O Railroad, which became Illinois Central and then C.N. In 1970, he married the love of his life, Bonnie Hall McKissick and they enjoyed 50 years of marriage before her passing in 2020. Hoppy loved being outdoors whether hunting or fishing. He never met a stranger which netted him great friendships over the years. He had a wonderful sense of humor and his family will always remember the joy and laughter he brought to each of them.

Hoppy leaves behind his daughter, Barbara Bennett of Saltillo; His son-in-law, Greg Bennett whom he loved like a son; five grandchildren, Nathan, Alex, Andy, Annabella, and Matt Bennett; his sister, Corinne Keith (Kenny) of Belden; a brother, Billy McKissick (Faye) of Iuka; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Bonnie McKissick; and two sisters, Sharon McKissick and Betty Jo Stacks.

Visitation will be 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Saturday, December 31, 2022 at Pegues, Saltillo. Services honoring his memory will follow at 1 p.m. at the Saltillo Chapel of Pegues Funeral Directors with Rev. Frankie Smith and Rev. Greg Johnson officiating.. Burial with military honors will be at Fellowship Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Nathan, Alex, and Andy Bennett, and Marty, Stacy and Tracy Stacks.
Honorary pallbearers will be Jerry Aderholt, Mike Akin, Bryson Boozer, Grady Boozer, Tommy White, Dean White, Danny McBrayer, Steve Minor, Wayne Minor, and Larry Hammer.
