Jeffie L. Gatlin, 84, of Tupelo, was called home to be with her Lord and Savior at the Page House in the Traceway Retirement Community on Sunday, September 11 , 2023. Jeffie was originally from Water Valley, where she played guard on the high school varsity basketball team. This led to her being a lifelong sports fan.
Jeffie and her family moved to Tupelo in the early 1960’s and she began her career in Tupelo as a teller at People’s Bank and Trust. In 1970, she started working at Hancock Fabrics in the Payroll Department. Through diligent, meticulous work, Jeffie received several promotions, eventually becoming Hancock Fabrics’ first female Vice President. Jeffie retired from Hancock Fabrics after 33 years. Jeffie was also a long-time member of St. Mark United Methodist Church, where she routinely prepared the weekly bulletin and served as the financial secretary.
Jeffie is survived by two sons and one daughter and their families, as well as her sister, Sue Logan and Sue’s husband Blue Logan.
Jeffie was preceded in death by her loving husband of 61 years, Richard Gatlin; her parents, Woodrow and Beatrice Wright; her brother, Billy Wayne Wright; and her sister, Barbara Joe Wright.
Visitation for Jeffie will be 5 until 7 p.m. Thursday, September 14, 2023 at Pegues, Tupelo.
Services honoring Jeffie’s life will be held 10 a.m. Friday, September 15, 2023 at her beloved St. Mark United Methodist Church with Rev. Roger Puhr officiating. Interment will be at Mount Liberty Church Cemetery near Water Valley, Mississippi.
