Saltillo - Jeff Powell Land, 76, died Monday, October 11, 2010, at The Sanctuary Hospice House after an extended illness. He was born October 25, 1933 in Philadelphia, MS to Milton Leland and Emilyn Powell Land. He graduated from Mathiston High School and then served in the U.S. Army Infantry during the Korean War. Following his military service, he went to the University of Mississippi where he graduated with a degree in accounting. He established his certified public accounting practice in 1958 in Tupelo, later known as Land Sonnier, PA. A longtime resident of the Lee County area, he was very active in the community, serving as president of the Lee County School Board for 18 years. He enjoyed woodworking and was an avid Ole Miss football fan. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and also a former member of West Jackson Street Baptist Church and First Baptist Church of Saltillo. He was very active in all of his churches and served as a deacon and Sunday School teacher.
Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Calvary Baptist Church with Dr. David Eldridge and Rev. Mark Cayson officiating. Burial will be in Saltillo Cemetery. W. E. Pegues Funeral Directors is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include his wife, Anne Land of Saltillo; three children, Cheryl Land of Tupelo, Dudley Land (Sherry) of Saltilo, and Claire Sonnier (Patrick) of Aurora, Co.; five grandchildren, Holly Fleming and Jeff Land of Saltillo, and Stephen, Gregory, and Matthew Sonnier of Aurora, Co.; his sister-in-law, Frances Land of Tupelo.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, James D. Land and Leland Land; and a sister, Julia Griffis.
Honorary pallbearers will be The Members of the Men's Adult B Sunday School Class
Visitation will be 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home on Jefferson Street.
