Tupelo - Jeanette M. Jean Smith, 91, died Thursday, March 5, 2009, at her residence after an extended illness. A native of St. Louis, Mo., she was born February 7, 1918, to John and Anna Novotny Goudy. She graduated from Beaumont High School in St. Louis and then attended The Hadly School of Cosmetology. Shortly after she married in 1940, she and her husband visited Tupelo and fell in love with the town and the people. It became their home for the next 65 years. She was a longtime member of the Women's Literary Club and a faithful member of First Baptist Church where she served as a Sunday School teacher for many years. She first taught the young people's department and then moved on to the young married class. She then taught adult women of The Fedellis Class. She loved working in her yard and taking care of stray animals. She was the last surviving member of six siblings and their spouses.

Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at The Jefferson Street Chapel of W. E. Pegues. Burial will be in Tupelo Memorial Park.

Survivors include several nieces and nephews including Larry Goudy and wife, Sharon, of St. Louis, Mo.; and special friend Wanda Moroney of Pontotoc.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 61 years, John Smith; and three brothers, brothers and sisters, Larry Goudy and wife, Bernice, James Goudy and wife, Lora, Robert Goudy and wife, Thelma; and two sisters, Hortense Fischer and husband, Halbert, Muriel Nichols and husband, Frances; and special friend Jerry Moroney

Pallbearers will be Harry Martin, Don Moroney, Terry Smith, Bill Pennington, Rob Cousar, Elton Putnam

Jim Catledge will serve as honorary pallbearer.

Visitation will be 10 a.m. until service time Saturday at the funeral home.
