Jane Kellum

January 11, 1931 — August 22, 2015

JANE KELLUM Tupelo - Jane Newell Carr Kellum, 84, passed peacefully on August 22, surrounded by her family, at North Mississippi Medical Center. Originally from Leland, Jane was preceded by her parents, Samuel Frederick Carr and Pauline Newell Carr, brother, Dr. Fred Carr, and by her husband of nearly fifty-four years, Raymond Lester Kellum. She is survived by her children, Mary Beth Elam (Mark) of Mt. Pleasant, Diane Parker (Taylor) of Bogalusa, Louisiana, Lynn Townsend (Mark) of Brookwood, Alabama, and Ray Kellum (Jo) of Signal Mountain, Tennessee, as well as grandchildren, Erica Keller Swindle of New Hope, Emma Kellum of Washington, D.C., Trey Cates of Pontotoc, and Shad Elam of Mt. Pleasant; great-grandson Landon Swindle of New Hope. Jane completed her formal education at The Mississippi State College for Women in Columbus (now Mississippi University for Women), earning a degree in Music Education. She began her career as a music teacher in Essex, Missouri, where she met and married Raymond and where their children were born. In 1965, the family moved to Tupelo, Raymond's hometown and Jane's adopted hometown, where they were members of West Main Church of Christ. Jane taught music to generations of children at Joyner, Rankin and Lawhon Elementary Schools, retiring from the Tupelo Public School system in 1993. Jane leaves a legacy of music, bright smiles and fond memories of family travels, shared meals, and purring cats. Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, August 25, 2015, at West Main Church of Christ with Ministers Doug Greenway and Charles Tharp officiating. Graveside services will follow in Tupelo Memorial Park. W. E. Pegues Funeral Directors is in charge of arrangements. Pallbearers will be Austin Monroe, Bob Monroe, Jimmy Oakes, her nephews, Dr. Andy Kellum, Dr. Ken Kellum, Dr. Mark Kellum, Dr. Dan Kellum, and Dr. Tom Kellum. Honorary pallbearers will be Nancy Kilpatrick, Dean Wood, Pat Sheffield, Joyce Swain, Sue Rasberry, Becky Finn, Glenda Malone, Lamoise Young, Peggy Ramsey, Alan & Karen Phillips, Mary Smith, Hewitt Rogers, Monica Spencer, and Evelyn McEwen. Visitation will be 4 until 7 pm. Monday, August 24, 2015, at W. E. Pegues, Tupelo.
