James B. "Red" Henley

JAMES B."RED" HENLEY

Verona - James B."Red" Henley, 86, died Wednesday, September 27, 2006, at North Mississippi Medical Center after an extended illness. A Prairie native, he was born May 27, 1920 to the late Eldridge W. Henly, II and Addie Lee Hussey Henley. He was a U. S. Navy veteran of World War II. He played professional baseball and was a Golden Glove boxer. He managed the TTI baseball club of Mississippi State, Prairie, Miss., and retired from law enforecemnt. He managed the KBL baseball league in Verona, winning the KBL championship for six years. He was an A-1 Atlanta Braves fan. Earlier in life, he paged in the House of Representatives for four years, while his father was representtative for three terms. He was an avid crappie fisherman and loved to hunt. He was a member of Verona United Methodist Church and a past master mason of Verona lodge.

Services will be 1 p.m. Friday, September 29, 2006 at Verona United Methodist with Rev. Don Sparks officiating. Burial will be in Verona City Cemetery. W. E. Pegues Funeral Directors is in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Sue Sykes Henley of Verona; one son, Mickey Henley and wife, Margie, of Cordova, Tenn., three daughters, Cherry Dillard and husband, Davis, of Mantachie, Sue Carol Miller and husband, Howard, of Cordova, Tenn., Stephanie Kingsley and husband, Danny, of Tupelo;15 grandchildren, and 21 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Sandra June Brett; a son, Charles Wayne "Tootie" Henley; four sisters, and three brothers.

Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home and 12 p.m. until service time at the church Friday.
