JAMES E. RASBERRY

Tupelo - JAMES EDWARD RASBERRY, 79, died Sunday, October 15, 2006, at The Sanctuary Hospice House after an extended illness. A native of the Furrs Community, he was born June 8, 1927 to the late Eldridge Lowry Rasberry, Sr and Lovie Lora Lowry Rasberry. In 1945 he graduated from Pontotoc High School. He was a US Navy veteran, serving in World War II in the Philippines. After the war, he graduated from Memphis School of Commerce. He was manager and later owned Osburn-Abston Auto Parts Company and then in 1961 he began his career with the US Post Office as a clerk. He was later appointed as a rural carrier on Rural Route 6, retiring after 30 years of service. For several years he served as a Mississippi delegate to the National Rural Letter Carriers Convention and was also a Board Representative. In 1973, he was recognized nationally as Outstanding Rural Carrier of the Year. He had a great interest in politics, serving as a Colonal for Gov. Bill Waller. He was a 32 degree Scottish Rite Mason for 48 years and a member of the Robert E. Lee Blue Lodge, serving as secretary for 15 years. He was a member of the Lee County shriners (Hamasa). He was an avid Ole Miss Rebel fan, attending footbal and basketball games for over 60 years. He was a charter member of the local "SEC Roundball Sixers," who traveled to SEC conferences annually. He loved his grandchildren and will be remembered for his sense of humor, practical jokes, and his warm and outgoing personality. He was a member of Harrisburg Baptist Church.

Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 18, 2006 at The Jefferson Street Chapel of W. E. Pegues with Dr. Forrest Sheffield, Rev. David Langerfeld, and Rev. Ray Ware officiating. Burial will be in White Zion Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife of 49 years Ruth Donald Rasberry of Tupelo; two daughters, Leah Partlow and husband, George, of Tupelo, Jamie Rasberry French and husband, Scott French, of San Diego, Calif.; three sisters, Margorie Swindol of Cleveland, Martha Love Laster and husband, Jack, of Germantown, Tenn., Nell Grisham and husband, Bill, of Hot Springs, Ark.; three grandsons, Hunter and Clay Partlow and Sheldon French; one step-granddaughter, Karlie French; several nieces, nephews, and members of the Will J. Donald family.

He was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Marla Kelsey Partlow and one brother, Lowry Rasberry, Jr.

Pallbearers will be Ken Swindol, Greg Parish, Charles Gillentine, David Brown, Don Burcham, Bill Ready, Phillip Elam.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Hamilton & Brenda Smith, Charles and Edna Twitty, Leon and Ellen Malone, Byron And Ruth Sneed, Smith and Sara Heavner, Joe Kilgo, Bill Tallant, Mays Tallant, Billy Burks, Freddy White, Joe E. Whitten, George Shelton, and John and Hazel Street.

Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, at the funeral home.
