Memphis. Tennesee formely of Tupelo- Dr James Leighton Pettis, Jr., 85, passed away Thursday, November 15, 2018. He was born in Oxford
June 14, 1933 to James Leighton Pettis, Sr. and Elizabeth Pettis. After graduating from University High School, Leighton enrolled at the University of Mississippi where he was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity, Phi Eta Sigma and Phi Chi Medical Fraternity, and a member of the Ole Miss tennis team. He received his medical degree from the University of Tennessee Medical School in 1958. He completed his residency in ophthalmology at Tulane University Medical School.
He began his practice in Tupelo, Mississippi in 1962 and retired in 2006. Leighton was a devoted Christian and an active member at the First Presbyterian Church in Tupelo where he was an Elder Emeritus and served on several mission trips to Guatemala. He was a member of the Mississippi State Medical Association, served on the board of Community Federal, served as President of Mississippi Tennis Association and a
board member of Southern United States Tennis Association.
Leighton was devoted to his family, friends, patients and his church. He was a kind and loving man who was loved by many people.
He is survived by son, Jim Pettis (Susan);three daughters, Brenda Warren (John), Libby Maloch (Roger), Leigh Anne Luther (Gripp);
ten grandchildren, Elizabeth Pettis, Catherine Pettis, Caroline Pettis, Scott Warren (Elizabeth), Ashley Stanford, Keller Carlock, Leighton Carlock, Thomas Carlock, Neill Luther and Leighton Luther; two great grandchildren Lawson and McRae; one brother, Ben Pettis (Adalene).
He is preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Leighton Pettis and his loving wife of 53 years, Jean Greene Pettis.
Visitation will be held 3 until 6 p.m. Sunday, November 18, 2018 at W.E. Pegues, Tupelo.
A Celebration of his life will be 11 a.m. Monday, November 19, 2018 at the First Presbyterian Church in Tupelo. Graveside services will be
3 p.m. Monday at Oxford Memorial Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Scott Warren, Keller Carlock, Thomas Carlock, Neill Luther, Leighton Luther, Autry Barry, Jim Ingram and Michael Gratz, Jr.
Honorary pall bearers will be Henry Dodge, Michael Gratz, Sr., Hugh Luckett, Dr. Joe Chappell, Dr. Benton Hilbun, Chuck Imbler, Gray Megginson, Billy Moore and Dr. Merrick Wyble, Dr. John Elliott, Dr. Swan Burrus, Dr. Marion Winkler, Heywood Washburn and Benny Randle.
